Boatyard Dreams

Old boats may allow you to travel around the globe, but there’s nothing like an old boatyard to take you places that you’ve never been.

What is it about these, often ancient always evocative, work houses that gets the grey-matter churning up plans for adventure?

It must be the potential, or perhaps the loitering spirits of the daring souls who have passed through them.

The resinous smell of fresh-cut pine and the sound of roves hammered home.

Beneath unused buildings lie rotting wrecks: last signs of sagas long forgotten.

Slanting pools of golden sun kindle fictional flames in sawdust-laden corners.

Cracked panes crusted deeply with dust from long-blunt saws.

Old tools fill workbenches with potential.

Unfamiliar names scratched into the hafts of tools passed down or yet to be returned.

A world away from office-work and tubes and trains.

A world where wood is king and tar preserves and water is both enemy and friend.

A place where the possible becomes solely restrained by the size of trees and sheds.

Cathedrals of worship to the wonders of the wind god.

These are just a few photos of our favourite yards.
